What are Coffee Screen Sizes?

Screen size is a physical measurement of green coffee beans using standardized perforated screens. Each screen has a specific diameter, usually measured in 1/64-inch increments, allowing beans to be sorted by size. For example, a “16 screen” indicates beans that pass through a 16/64-inch opening.

Screen size does not directly indicate cup quality, but it often correlates with bean density, uniformity, and potential for even roasting. Larger beans are frequently more mature and denser, while smaller beans may be underdeveloped or unevenly processed.

Why Screen Sizes Matter

Roasting consistency
Uniform screen sizes allow heat to transfer evenly across the batch, reducing the risk of tipping or uneven development. Mixing significantly different sizes can result in overdeveloped or underdeveloped beans in the same roast.

Grading and sorting
Screen sizes are part of grading standards in many origins, often linked to defect counts and preparation categories like EP. They provide a baseline for lot classification and export specifications.
